"The turn of the century saw
for women, a drastic change in the styles of clothing that might be
acceptable and fashionable. Some features dress grew less
restricting, others grew more so. It was a time of change and
experimentation and some styles worked and lasted, some did not. The 1910s
set the stage for the roaring 20s, when inhibitions tended to be
cast aside in the way of what was proper and modest and
appropriate. It is important to remember, then, that our current
time frame (1912) is less than a decade away from short
dresses, bare arms and any number of other fashion statements
that, less than twenty years previous, would have been thought
of as scandalous. Women in 1912 still dressed
“modestly” (perhaps somewhat prudish, by today’s standards), but
their clothing of choice was far from what even their parents
would have worn"
