1930-1939

classic 1930s dresses

"Unlike the boyish 1920s dresses that concealed curves, the 1930s dresses had shapely lines and aimed to celebrate the female figure. Dresses returned to define the waistline, and at the start of the decade, women wore dresses that emphasized the shoulders. This included butterfly sleeves, puffed sleeves, and angular shoulders which, in turn, would give the illusion of a smaller waist. Most daytime dresses at this time were designed at calf length, so for a classic 1930s style, opt for a midi length dress with soft, fluttery sleeves and a defined empire waistline. Later in the decade, 1930s dresses focused on the eveningwear gown with a high or halter neckline and an emphasized open back. Metallic lamé, fabric interwoven with metallic threads, was introduced and played a part in establishing eveningwear as grandiose and elegant in contrast with sensible daywear. The bias cut also came into a vogue during this time as a way to drape and gather fabric diagonally to also emphasize the female figure." Source: http://shopruche.com/1930s-fashion.html

During the 1930's due to the Great Depression, many people had dresses went back to being full length and a little bit loose and less fancier but still elegant. The dresses became more comfortable to wear and to move around in.These dresses were suitable for every event. The sleeves of these dresses became shorter and the bottom of the dresses became more wavier.

Origin: In the years before 1030's, many women wore tighter clothes but this was changing. Although these new dresses were still tight from the waist's, they were totally different from what the Flapper's wore. These dresses were lighter and easier to wear and not many women wore a lot of jewelry.

Purpose: Many innovations were seen in fashion during the Great Depression even though there was a lot of hardship during that time. The designers of the time experimented with different fabrics and styles. After 1935, the invention of a zipper arose and many designers used zippers for their dresses. Many designers at this time started designing dresses for women who worked in movies. Many women who watched movies were influenced by the type of dress style.

Value: These dresses show that during this decade The Great depression occurred. It also tells that the new types movies were being invented that influenced many women to dress the way they did in movies.

Limitations: The style of these dresses don't show a lot of they side affects of The Great Depression. It doesn't tell weather many people followed these styles or if their were people who still dresses like Flappers. I may be that some parents preferred these types of dresses over the Flapper dresses in the 1930's.

"Women's fashions in the early 1920's experienced dramatic changes following the end of the first world war, in a period often referred to as the "roaring 20's", the era of the "flapper".The passing of bustles and corsets gave clothing designers much greater freedom of expression resulting in innovative styling. Women dressing in the new and colorful fabrics echoed the joy felt by a war weary population following the end of hostilities.1920's Dresses were lighter (due to less material and new synthetic fabrics) and brighter and shorter than ever before. Fashion designers played with fabric colors, textures and patterns to create totally new styles of dress. Evening dresses, coats and jackets were often trimmed with fur. Hemlines rose for most of the decade but dropped slightly toward the end." http://www.1920-30.com/fashion/
During this decade world war I ended which cause many women rights.  During the 1920's, many things changed including women fashion. A whole new idea of a woman arose. Woman were now called flapper which was the new image of a woman that drank, voted, ect. Women dresses became much shorter and many started wearing bright colors and a lot of jewelry.

OriginThese types  of dresses originated when the world war I ended and women earned their freedom. Women decided not to waste time and wanted to enjoy life. Women started wearing, acting the way they wanted. Nearly every type of clothing was changed or cut down shorter. Their dresses started having "V" shaped dresses. Some famous fashion designers that created these dresses were Patou, Molyneux, Chanel, Boue Souers, Louiseboulanger, Augustabernard and Vionnet.

Purpose: The major purpose for these dresses was to show that women were free to act and dress however they wished. This piece brought a lot of change in the century. Flappers broke away the tradition of the Victorian age. Everyone was changing there style of dresses which became more wide spread through out they country. Women stopped wearing corset, they cut their hair shorter, and cut layers of clothing from dresses to make movement easier. More elegancy arose and people acted in a more richer way.

Value: This peace expresses many change during the decade. Women went from the Victorian age which was very simple to Flapper which was highly fashionable.

Limitation: This peace doesn't show everyone opinion on flappers. It doesn't show weather parent at the time liked it or not or if young teens liked it. It doesn't tell if their were any people against flappers. Did people like women who drank and smoke? It doesn't tell us weather flappers were looked at in a good way or not.other supported them.

1910-1919

Fashion in the 1910s.

"The turn of the century saw for women, a drastic change in the styles  of clothing that might be acceptable and fashionable. Some features  dress grew less restricting, others grew more so. It was a time of change and experimentation and some styles worked and lasted, some did not. The 1910s set the  stage for the roaring 20s, when inhibitions tended to be cast aside in the way of what was proper and modest and appropriate. It is important to remember, then, that our current  time frame (1912) is less than a decade away from short dresses,  bare arms and any  number of other fashion statements that, less than twenty years  previous, would have been thought  of as scandalous. Women in 1912 still dressed “modestly” (perhaps somewhat prudish, by today’s standards), but their clothing of choice was far from what even their parents would have worn"

This era was a time of change. These women wanted softer Dresses to wear. These dresses became shorter, no arms and many people, parents especially, didn't like these types of dresses. During the 1910's women started to think about comfort dresses. The dresses were still modest but they have more comfort than before. There was no more hobble skirts. Their dresses has lots of pockets and the length was up to there ankle.

ORIGIN: The 1910's was also called the Edwardian era. During this time a lot of Shape and silhouette  started evolving . These types of dresses originated because women wanted simpler dresses to wear. These dresses were first to be made by sewing Machines.

PURPOSE: The purpose for these dresses was for women to feel comfortable
with wearing them. They were very stylish but it was way simpler than the once they had before. These were very good for party dresses, home dresses or working dresses. Many people were buying sewing machines and other new products even if they didn't need it. People were spending a lot of money.

Value: During this time, many new products were being made like sewing machines. Dresses were previously hand sewn but they were now being made by sewing machines. This time period was age of elegance in which people dressed modest and went to balls. Looking at these dresses you can tell that these people were really acted really elegant .

Limitation: This piece doesn't show weather or not people liked it dressing this way. It doesnt show what their personal thoughts were and if they wanted to wear it or not.

1900-1909

"In the book, The Perfect Lady, Willet C. Cunnington describes the period from 1900 to 1910 as the “reign of lingerie,” and indeed fashion magazines in these years, and especially in summer months, show many examples and variations of the so-called “lingerie dress”- a style of dress adorned with embroidery, lace, pin tucks, ruffles and ribbons which was inspired by the chemise gown, as part of an eighteenth- century revival."-By:

In the 1900-1910, women mainly wore lingerie dresses which were long dresses with laces, ruffles and ribbons.  This style somewhat remained the same throughout the 20th century but women changes the waists and sleeves to bring in there own taste.

ORIGIN: The period of 1900-1910 was named after Queen Victoria and the beginning of the Edwardian era.  Some French people referred to this age as the "Beautiful Age". As the Victorian age started to end, the dresses started to reform. Paul Poiret, a fashion designer from Paris developed new ideas for dresses. Th dresses started becoming tighter on the hips and they no longer needed to be puffy from the chest. The dresses were high collared with long sleeves and had a tuxedo on top. The dresses were long and had laces and buttons.

PURPOSE: These dresses were mainly made for women to wear at ceremonies and at parties. Women wore them everywhere they went. These dresses were made because of the Victorian age which was the fashion age .

VALUE: These types of changes in dresses showed a lot about the attitudes and lifestyles of women and the huge impact of the war on many people. Many people developed personal identity and how they would socialize. These different types of dressed told a little bit about the time period. The time period was an age of elegance.

LIMITATIONS: Although these different designs of dresses showed how many people were like and how they acted, it doesn't tell us a lot about the time period. This piece doesn't show if people were into wearing these puffy types of dresses.
