1980-1989

"The early 80's were somewhat subdued in color, where we see a lot browns and tans and oranges. Blocky shapes were everywhere and dressing like a tennis player was the cool thing to do. Velour was hot and velvet was even hotter. For both men and women, the waistline was a little high.Bright colored accessories like sunglasses, bangles and hoop earrings were a necessity. Teased hair, loud makeup and neon were an important part of this style. This style was obviously more popular with the younger crowd. But that didn't mean “regular” women in the 1980s couldn't have fun. It was an exceptionally flexible time when a woman could wear skin-tight cotton stirrup pants with leggings and a giant turtleneck sweater one day — and parachute pants with a small v-neck top and a high-waist belt the next." http://www.retrowaste.com/1980s/fashion-in-the-1980s/

During this decade, the use of bright color emerged and many women started wearing sort dresses and skirts.

Origin: Starting at this decade, many people became obsessed with popular brands like Cocoa-cola and Nike. The new trend was basically influenced in America. America influenced China and other countries.

Purpose: The main purpose for designers to make these new styled clothing were because the styles spread worldwide and many people were influenced by it, especially women. Designers also developed them because women were attracted to their styles and the number of females in population started increasing.

Value: This piece had lots of value because it was a popular trend many people were attracted to and spread quickly from Paris to U.S.

Limitation: Though this Item shows a lot about how the world is changing and new styles are evolving, it doesn't show other peoples perspective and it doesn't show how it affected elder people and how American traditions were changing.

1970-1979

"In the beginning of the decade, women’s styles were very flamboyant. Extreme, bright colors were in high demand and long, flowing skirt and pants were everywhere. In the winter. In the summer, women wore very short shorts and skin tight t-shirts. Oh, and you can’t forget about the roller skates. With every year, pants were flaring wider and wider. It was common for a pair of women’s wide-flare slacks to have 32″ around the bottom of the leg hem. Soon the flare exploded into bell bottoms and it couldn’t go anywhere but smaller from there.Another trend was emerging and soon took over the fashion world: suits. Women were wearing pants in the sixties, but not all of them. By the time the 70s rolled around, women were wearing pants in every walk of life. Female executives were wearing business suits with pants, women at home were wearing jeans. Women’s fashion in the mid-to-late 1970s was dominated by suits. Leisure suits, pant suits, jump suits and track suits (also known as warm-up suits) were worn from coast to coast. That’s not to say that dresses, blouses, skirts and other popular garments weren’t worn, it’s just that they weren’t as important to defining the style of the times.Above all, women could finally wear whatever they wanted. Sure, gender roles still played a part in wardrobe choices, but compared to previous generations, women’s fashion in the 1970's was nothing short of revolutionary." http://www.retrowaste.com/1970s/fashion-in-the-1970s/1970s-fashion-for-women-girls/
Origin: This style of dresses originated form Pairs. The trend was introduced in Paris and then adapted through America. Women started wearing loose bell bottom pants during the early 70's.
Purpose: The purpose for women wearing these dresses was to show people that they can do what they want. They started wearing suits like men to show equality. It also showed that women can do things men can do and that nothing separates women from men.
Value:
Limitation: This piece doesn't show the affects of the Cold war. It doesn't show what went on during the time of the cold war.

1960-1969

"The late 1960s were the exact opposite. Bright, swirling colors. Psychedelic, tie-dye shirts and long hair and beards were commonplace. Woman wore unbelievably short skirts and men wore tunics and capes. The foray into fantasy would not have been believed by people just a decade earlier. It’s almost like the 1950s bottled everyone up so much that the late 1960s exploded like an old pressure cooker. Women were showing more skin than ever before. For the first time in the 19th Century, London, not Paris, was the center of the fashion world. The British Invasion didn’t stop with The Beatles. It swept into all parts of life, especially clothing."http://www.retrowaste.com/1960s/fashion-in-the-1960s/

The 1960's was the total opposite of the previous years. They styles of the dresses caned completely. Dresses began to get shorter, More brighter colors came a long and the new invention "Bikini" was introduced. styles kept changing in the 1960's. In 1961, a casual custom look was introduces, 1992, the wear for a lot of glow in dresses, 1993, knee-high skirts and sleeveless dresses, 1994, very short clothing and brighter colors, The 1995's brought a new look called "poor boy" in which they wore cow boy hats, white dress with white flat boots.

Origin: Most of the fashion in the US was taken from the fashion in London. Many designers in London were changing the styles of clothing and introducing new trends in fashion.

Purpose: The purpose of these dresses was to show that women were independent and were free to do what they wanted to.

Value: During the 1968, many new technology like rattling chains, zippers, brass buttons, clamps were introduced which were used on many women clothing.

Limitations: During the 1960's there were many fighting for rights like the "i have a dream speech" and African Americans wanting equality. This Item doesn't tell  much about what it was like and what hardship the US was going through.

1950-1959

cute 1950s style dress
"The boxy structure of 1940's women’s fashion came to an end in the 1950's as Christian Dior’s soft, rounded “New Look” gained popularity in America. With the men back from war, women focused on their suburban role as homemakers, and looked for clothing that was easy to wash and keep neat. Acrylic, spandex and polyester were introduced during the decade". http://shopruche.com/1950s-fashion.html

During this decade many new styles and ways of dressing up in the 1950's. The options for these types of dresses were endless.

Origin: This "new look" was invented by Christian Dior. Christian Dior became a popular clothing designer in 1950's and still exist today. As the decade continued, the styles of dresses became different and many people started to wear them.

Purpose: The purpose for the dresses was to bring a new trend in the era and remove old fashion clothes. The dresses mainly had a floral and gingham pattern.

Value: These dresses had lots of value because they became really popular and were very expensive.

1940-1949

"The primary influence on women's fashion in the 1940's was war. The effects of war would not only influence fashion in the 1940s, but would set fashion — from that point on — on a divergent path from which had been on before. On September 1st of 1939, German invaded Poland. Two days later, England and France declared war on Germany. By June 14th, 1940, Germany captured Paris. The United States had remained out of the war overseas, but after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, 1941, the United States declared war on both Japan, Germany, and Italy (Germany's war ally), and officially entering World War II. Until Paris fell to Germany, most fashion designers copied their designs from the French, this included designers in the United States where the norm had been to make inexpensive reproductions. Without Paris, Americans were forced to be innovative and create their own fashions. In the end, America would rise as the sportswear capital of the world, and American fashion would be the strongest fashion influence on the rest of the world".

At this time, The world war 2 was over which brought a "new look" for women. The new look had

  • Soft, sloping shoulders, rather than the shoulder pads
  • Narrow waists
  • Skirts wrapped tightly over the hips
  • Full skirts

Origin: This "new look" originated by Christian Dior during 1947. She reintroduced Frances' fashion industry after a few years. This style also expresses the femininity by the rounded shoulders of the dresses and the tight waists. Toward the ends of these dresses they had slightly padded skirts with full skirts that hung just below the calves.

Purpose: This style reflected on the change in style of the century. Many teenagers started wearing shorter skirts and sweaters which lead into the 1950's. The purpose for these changes in style was the World War 2. World War 2 gave a new style and view of clothing by their uniforms.

Value: At the end of World war 2, many things were being brought back to fashion. Many designers were designing new types of clothes. This type of style expressed the utility fashion many people wore during the world war 2. Many women started wearing pants or slacks during this time because it replaced the war time utility fashion.

Limitations: This item doesn't tell a lot about the time period like if people thought it was a good or bad thing to dress in this type of style. It doesn't tell the other types or styles that people wore during this period.

1930-1939

classic 1930s dresses

"Unlike the boyish 1920s dresses that concealed curves, the 1930s dresses had shapely lines and aimed to celebrate the female figure. Dresses returned to define the waistline, and at the start of the decade, women wore dresses that emphasized the shoulders. This included butterfly sleeves, puffed sleeves, and angular shoulders which, in turn, would give the illusion of a smaller waist. Most daytime dresses at this time were designed at calf length, so for a classic 1930s style, opt for a midi length dress with soft, fluttery sleeves and a defined empire waistline. Later in the decade, 1930s dresses focused on the eveningwear gown with a high or halter neckline and an emphasized open back. Metallic lamé, fabric interwoven with metallic threads, was introduced and played a part in establishing eveningwear as grandiose and elegant in contrast with sensible daywear. The bias cut also came into a vogue during this time as a way to drape and gather fabric diagonally to also emphasize the female figure." Source: http://shopruche.com/1930s-fashion.html

During the 1930's due to the Great Depression, many people had dresses went back to being full length and a little bit loose and less fancier but still elegant. The dresses became more comfortable to wear and to move around in.These dresses were suitable for every event. The sleeves of these dresses became shorter and the bottom of the dresses became more wavier.

Origin: In the years before 1030's, many women wore tighter clothes but this was changing. Although these new dresses were still tight from the waist's, they were totally different from what the Flapper's wore. These dresses were lighter and easier to wear and not many women wore a lot of jewelry.

Purpose: Many innovations were seen in fashion during the Great Depression even though there was a lot of hardship during that time. The designers of the time experimented with different fabrics and styles. After 1935, the invention of a zipper arose and many designers used zippers for their dresses. Many designers at this time started designing dresses for women who worked in movies. Many women who watched movies were influenced by the type of dress style.

Value: These dresses show that during this decade The Great depression occurred. It also tells that the new types movies were being invented that influenced many women to dress the way they did in movies.

Limitations: The style of these dresses don't show a lot of they side affects of The Great Depression. It doesn't tell weather many people followed these styles or if their were people who still dresses like Flappers. I may be that some parents preferred these types of dresses over the Flapper dresses in the 1930's.
